UTERINE INVOLUTION

After birth, the uterus begins an extraordinary recovery process called uterine involution, shrinking from about 2 pounds immediately postpartum to just a few ounces over roughly 6 weeks. During this time, the placental site heals, lochia is discharged, and organs displaced during pregnancy gradually readjust as the uterus returns toward its pre-pregnancy size.
