Day 6 of 42 Postpartum Nutrition Meal Series

What is Qi? And more about FAMMá's Qi - Life Force Herbal Soup part of the first week of FAMMás 42-Day Postpartum Nutrition Soup & Congee Program

How to Make 2. Qi – Life Force Soup

This nourishing herbal soup combines six traditional Chinese ingredients: coix seed, Chinese yam, lotus seed, jujube, lily bulb, and Solomon's seal.

Ingredients:

  • 1 FAMMá Qi – Life Force Soup Kit

  • ½ whole chicken or 2–3 lbs pork with bones

  • 2 oz fresh ginger, sliced

  • Daikon radish or other mild vegetables (optional)

  • 4 quarts water

  • Sea salt, soy sauce, or fish sauce to taste

Directions:

  1. Place the herbal soup kit, chicken or pork, ginger, and vegetables into a large pot. Slice jujubes for sweeter broth (warning: there are seeds inside)

  2. Add 4 quarts of water and bring to a boil.

  3. Reduce heat and gently simmer for at least 45–60 minutes, or longer for pork, until the meat is tender and fully cooked.

  4. Remove any herb sachets that aren't intended to be eaten. Season to taste.

  5. Divide into four generous servings of approximately 24 oz each, distributing the meat evenly. Serve warm. Optional: Serve with rice, blanched greens, and other dishes like our ginger pork in another post.

What Is Qi, and Why Is It Important After Childbirth?

Long before we could measure hormones like estrogen and progesterone, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners were caring for new mothers through a concept called Qi (pronounced "chee"), often described as the body's life energy.

In TCM, Qi is believed to support digestion, circulation, strength, and overall vitality. It's also influenced by sleep, stress, movement, emotions, relationships, and our environment. Rather than focusing on individual symptoms, TCM considers how the whole body works together.

Childbirth requires tremendous energy, and in TCM, new mothers are often considered vulnerable to Qi and blood deficiency.

Nourishing Qi During the Clearing Stage

Day 6 is still part of the first week of FAMMá's 42-Day Postpartum Nutrition Program, which we call the Clearing Stage.

This phase traditionally focuses on supporting the body's natural postpartum recovery, including the discharge of lochia, while beginning to nourish and rebuild strength.

Chinese herbal medicine draws on thousands of years of recorded knowledge. The ingredients in Qi – Life Force Soup have long been valued in traditional food and herbal practices for their nourishing qualities.

FAMMá carefully sources, measures, and hand-packs these ingredients so new mothers and their loved ones can easily prepare traditional postpartum nourishment at home.
