Day 1 of 42: Postpartum Nutrition Meal Series
An entire postpartum meal in about an hour! The secret? Planning, timing, and cooking everything simultaneously!
STEP 1 | Soups (0–10 min)
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
Break down 1 whole chicken and divide between 2 pots, bones included. Add 1 packet each of FAMMá Sheng Hua Tang and Qi Life Force, plus fresh ginger and chopped daikon.
Follow packet instructions for liquid amounts.
Chef Lando Tip: Use boiling water from an electric kettle to speed things up! Bring to a boil, then simmer very low for at least 45 minutes.
STEP 2 | Black Rice + Mung Beans (10–15 min)
- 2 cups black rice
- ½ cup glutinous sticky rice
- ½ cup mung beans
- Water, coconut water, or broth
Ratio: 4:1:1. Rinse and cook in a rice cooker using the appropriate liquid level and setting. Soak whole mung beans and black rice ahead if needed.
Chef Lando Tip: Black rice contains minerals and antioxidant anthocyanins. Glutinous rice helps keep refrigerated rice soft and moist. Save the rice-rinsing water for a traditional Asian hair rinse!
STEP 3 | Ginger-Roasted Whole Fish (15–45 min)
Use a small whole sea bream, snapper, sea bass, or trout.
Score both sides and stuff with sliced ginger. Place over chopped napa cabbage and leeks on a baking sheet.
Mix ½ cup tamari + ¼ cup Shaoxing wine (or rice wine, sake, or mirin). Coat fish on both sides.
Loosely tent with foil. Bake at 375°F for 20–30 minutes until cooked through (145°F internally). Uncover and broil the last 5 minutes for crispy skin.
Garnish with thinly sliced red bell pepper, cilantro, and optional crispy shallots and garlic. Pour the delicious cooking juices over everything!
STEP 4 | Sesame Greens (while fish bakes)
Blanch bok choy and broccolini just until bright green. Transfer immediately to an ice bath, drain, and toss with sea salt, toasted sesame oil, and plenty of toasted black and white sesame seeds.
Chef Lando Tip: Slightly undercook vegetables for meal prep so they don't turn soggy when reheated!
STEP 5 | Finish + Meal Prep (45–60+ min)
Remove chicken bones and herbal packets, shred chicken, and return to the soups. Portion each soup into four 24 oz containers, eight total.
Top rice with toasted sesame seeds, portion the fish and vegetables, and clean as you go!
A nourishing family-style meal with plenty to refrigerate or freeze!
As Your Asian Auntie LaLa says, Mama eats first!
